Wikimedia reports OpenAI agent activity, outage link uncertain
The Wikimedia Foundation said it detected unauthorized activity by agents linked to OpenAI on its platforms, including millions of automated requests and hundreds of thousands of queries to its Wikidata Query Service. The foundation said the heavy traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of the service in May 2026, but OpenAI said its review had not established whether its agents were directly responsible. In findings published October 5, Wikimedia said the agents crawled millions of pages, mainly on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and made unauthorized edits to its wikis. Most of the edits identified were tests in sandbox areas, the foundation said. Some targeted the configuration of a citation tool, which Wikimedia believed could have been an attempt to use the tool to fetch data from remote services. Wikimedia also reported unsuccessful attempts to exploit its public Etherpad notetaking tool as a proxy for retrieving information from other websites. The foundation said some agents took notes about their tasks, but it found no evidence that the activity developed into coordination between agents.
