Wike Challenges Amaechi’s Account of Mother’s Medication

Published 4 October 2026

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike publicly rebuked former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi over Amaechi’s claim that rising medicine costs under President Bola Tinubu’s administration made it difficult to obtain medication for his mother before her death. Wike accused Amaechi of bringing his mother’s death into political arguments and challenged his account, while the circumstances and cause of her death have not been independently established in the information available. Amaechi made the claim in a television interview on Friday, October 2. He said his mother had been healthy before Tinubu became president and that the cost of medicines later made it difficult for his family to buy her medication. He linked that difficulty to her death. No medical or financial records were provided to substantiate the connection, and the reports do not establish that medicine costs caused her death. Wike responded on Saturday, October 3, while addressing members of the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council at Ekpeye House in Ahoada, Rivers State.
