Amaechi makes Tinubu pledge conditional on ₦600 petrol

Published 2 October 2026

African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi said Friday he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sold for ₦600 per litre the following day. His statement was a conditional political pledge; the reports do not establish that the price reached that level or that Amaechi carried it out. Amaechi made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he challenged the government’s claims that fuel-price changes would ease transportation and living costs. He questioned whether fares, including those between Nyanya and Abuja, had fallen and said people had yet to experience the promised relief. He said he would go to a filling station Saturday morning to check the price and invited others to accompany him with a camera. Amaechi’s pledge tied that proposed visit to a specific political consequence: if petrol was selling at ₦600 per litre, he said he would leave Abubakar’s ticket and support Tinubu. No subsequent visit, pump-price observation or change in the ticket is verified in the supplied reports.
