Verity’s Ending Leaves the Family’s Past Unresolved

Published 3 October 2026

The psychological thriller Verity centers on writer Lowen, who travels to author Verity Crawford’s home to help finish the final books in Verity’s series and discovers a hidden manuscript that casts the family’s past in doubt. The film’s ending reveals that Verity had been feigning paralysis and that her husband, Jeremy, kills her after confronting her about the manuscript, according to a review of the film. But a letter discovered later offers a conflicting account, leaving the truth unresolved. Lowen, played by Dakota Johnson, accepts the assignment after Verity, played by Anne Hathaway, is left unable to write following an accident. At the family home, Lowen grows close to Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett, while searching through Verity’s notes. She finds a manuscript written as a biography in which Verity depicts herself as resenting motherhood and intentionally causing the death of her daughter. When Lowen shows the manuscript to Jeremy, he confronts Verity. She moves and begs for a chance to explain, revealing that she is not paralyzed; Jeremy then kills her.
