Valve launches Steam Frame VR headset at $1,059

Valve has launched its Steam Frame virtual reality headset, a standalone device priced at $1,059 for a 256GB model and $1,299 for a 1TB version. The headset, which replaces Valve's aging Index as its flagship VR product, is available for pre-order through a reservation lottery that closes on September 17, with initial purchase invitations set to go out on September 18. The Steam Frame features a lightweight design with a rear-mounted battery pack for balance and uses a dual-signal streaming system combining home Wi-Fi with a dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter to enable high-quality, cable-free PC VR streaming. Valve's developer Jeremy Selan stated the company aimed for a more affordable device but was impacted by the global RAM market, which saw prices more than double between October 2025 and early 2026. Early reviews highlight the headset's comfort and innovative streaming technology but also note significant software issues and a high price point that may limit its appeal. The device ships with a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx, rebuilt as a native standalone version for the headset.
