UK climate advisers challenge Heathrow expansion over emissions concerns

The UK's Climate Change Committee has concluded there is "no credible pathway" for expanding Heathrow Airport under the country's current climate policies, delivering a significant challenge to the government's plans for a third runway. The independent advisory body's report, released on Wednesday, states that expansion could only be compatible with legally binding net-zero targets if the aviation industry fully funds its own decarbonization through sustainable aviation fuels and engineered carbon removals. The committee's advice places it in direct conflict with the government's position. Chancellor John Healey recently reiterated support for the project, arguing it would deliver economic benefits of around £40 billion and support up to 60,000 jobs. A Department for Transport spokesperson said any expansion proposal would need to align with net-zero targets and that the government would "carefully consider" the CCC's advice alongside other consultation responses. Aviation emissions have more than doubled since 1990, while economy-wide emissions in the UK have halved.
