Two dead and one missing after flooding in Catalonia
Two people have died and at least one person is missing after torrential rain caused flooding in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, authorities said Sunday. Fire-service chief David Borrell said one person died when a wall collapsed at a campsite in Tordera, while another drowned in a flooded garage in Montornès del Vallès. Firefighters said a person was missing after being swept away by a stream in Pineda de Mar; the search and the person’s status remained unresolved in the reports available Sunday. The downpour flooded streets and homes, submerged vehicles and disrupted transport. Emergency services helped people trapped in vehicles, including in Granollers, north of Barcelona. Rail services were disrupted, and Barcelona airport reported flight cancellations and delays. Authorities also cancelled public events in areas at high risk, according to reports. Catalan Civil Protection sent mobile alerts advising residents in several counties to comply with travel restrictions and avoid nonessential journeys while the rain continued. A previous alert on Saturday recommended suspending activities and travel in 20 counties from 8 p.m.
