Floods and landslides in Nepal kill 24, leave 14 missing

Heavy rain triggered floods and landslides across Nepal, leaving 24 people dead and 14 missing, according to figures attributed to officials. The downpours also damaged homes, bridges and power infrastructure, while an avalanche at Himlung Himal killed two people from an expedition group and left 10 others unlocated. The reported nationwide deaths include 10 in Baglung, six in Myagdi, two in Manang, five in Palpa and one in Dhanusha. Police said 10 people were missing in Manang, three in Myagdi and one in Baglung. The tolls reflect officials’ reported figures; a separate tally from Nepal’s Bipad hazard portal covers a specified period beginning September 24 and records different totals. Authorities said the flooding and landslides directly affected 747 families, destroyed 143 houses and partially damaged 51. In Gandaki province, about 1,500 people from 435 households were displaced. The Kali Gandaki River caused extensive damage, while the Narayani and Tinau rivers also contributed to flooding, erosion and waterlogging, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
