Trump Questions Fairness of Cornell Assault Probe Under James

Published 3 October 2026

President Donald Trump questioned whether seven men under investigation over an alleged assault at Cornell University would receive fair treatment after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed state Attorney General Letitia James to oversee the criminal inquiry. James said her office would review the evidence and pursue prosecution if warranted. No criminal charges had been filed against the men as of the reports’ publication, and the investigation’s outcome remains unknown. Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Friday, October 2, Trump called James corrupt and said he felt badly for anyone she was investigating because they would not get a fair shake. His remarks followed Hochul’s decision to place James in charge of the case. Trump did not discuss the woman who made the allegations in his reported comments. The woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, alleges in a civil lawsuit that she was sexually assaulted by members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024. The claims remain allegations, not criminal findings. Attorneys for at least some of the men have denied wrongdoing, according to reports.
