Trump names Clayton to lead White House AI task force

Published 4 October 2026

President Donald Trump announced the creation of a White House task force called the Super Intelligence Force to assess artificial intelligence risks and opportunities and coordinate the government’s engagement with the technology sector and other groups. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead the effort, which is expected to report within 120 days, according to accounts of its planned mandate. Trump said the force would coordinate government engagement with consumers, public-interest groups, religious organizations, infrastructure providers and AI companies. He named Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon chief technology officer Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor as leaders alongside Clayton. The group is to report to Trump and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, according to the president’s announcement. The task force’s reported charter calls for examining AI’s risks and opportunities and recommending how the government should respond under existing authorities. Clayton said the review should address risks while avoiding overregulation that could stifle innovation.
