Capcom outlines REX overhaul of RE Engine for AI-assisted development

Published 3 October 2026

Capcom is planning a gradual overhaul of its RE Engine to make development more efficient and prepare the software for AI-assisted workflows, programmer Satoshi Ishida said at the CAPCOM Open Conference RE 2026 on October 2. The multistage effort, called REX, is intended to evolve the existing engine rather than replace it, with a long-term goal Capcom describes as an “AI-generation game engine.” The plan responds to challenges Capcom associates with making larger games, supporting bigger development teams and integrating new technology. The company’s stated aims for REX include improving development efficiency, engine performance, tools and quality assurance. The conference presentation described goals and planned systems; the available accounts do not establish how widely REX components have been implemented or whether they have produced measurable improvements. RE Engine is used across Capcom’s game development. Reports say more than 2,000 developers use it and that it has powered more than 27 titles.
