Trump Floats Renaming an Ocean and a River

Published 11 October 2026

President Donald Trump suggested renaming an ocean and a river during a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on October 10, floating “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas” as names for either the Atlantic or Pacific. He said he wanted an ocean and a river renamed before leaving office, but did not announce a formal plan or identify which ocean he preferred. Trump raised the idea while discussing previous efforts to change names used by U.S. federal agencies. He said the Hudson and Mississippi rivers would not be renamed. In remarks reported from the rally, he praised Henry Hudson’s exploration and said he would not change the Mississippi’s name. The proposed river was not specified. Trump said he wanted a river, but his comments left unclear what body of water he had in mind or how any change would be carried out. The suggestions were remarks at a rally, rather than an announced directive or formal proposal. The comments follow federal actions involving the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. An executive order signed in January 2025 directed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” in place of “Gulf of Mexico” in federal records.
