Trump Announces Medal of Freedom for Roger Clemens

Published 8 October 2026

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday at a rally in San Antonio that former major league pitcher Roger Clemens would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor. The announcement establishes Trump’s intention to give Clemens the award, but the reports do not confirm that it has been formally presented or provide a presentation date. Clemens was at the rally and introduced Trump before the president called him to the stage. Trump praised the seven-time Cy Young Award winner as one of the greatest athletes and possibly the greatest pitcher of all time. He also renewed his support for Clemens’s election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, saying Clemens deserved to be inducted. Clemens said he was stunned by the announcement and described the honor as surpassing his accomplishments during his playing career. He also expressed gratitude to Trump. The reports provide no further details about the process for completing the medal award. Clemens played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, including stints with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros.
