Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire, but Zelensky Seeks Details

Published 9 October 2026

President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire covering attacks on energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the announcement was news to him and that Ukraine would accept a truce if Russia also agreed, leaving the status of a reciprocal arrangement unsettled. Trump announced the ceasefire in a post on Truth Social, saying it was effective immediately and that both sides had agreed. He did not provide details on which attacks would be covered or how the arrangement would work. The White House had not clarified the announcement in the reports. Zelensky told Axios he had not known of an agreement and asked the United States to provide details on when it would begin. He said Ukraine was prepared to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In a later statement, he said Ukraine supported the ceasefire and was awaiting information from the U.S. Zelensky also said he had discussed the announced truce with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
