Nigeria Announces 30-Day Petrol Discount at NNPC Outlets

Published 8 October 2026

Nigeria’s federal government announced a 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited outlets, giving priority to public transport operators nationwide. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the arrangement would initially run for 30 days and involve selling petrol at cost, rather than restoring a fuel subsidy. Oyedele announced the measure at a press briefing in Abuja on October 8. He did not provide a start date or explain how transport operators would qualify for priority access. The announcement also did not specify which NNPC outlets would participate or how the discount would be applied at the pump. The actual retail price remains unsettled in the reports. One account described the discounted price as N1,350 per litre. In a separate reported explanation, Oyedele said the government was negotiating a ceiling of N1,350 per litre for petrol’s ex-gantry or landing cost, with monthly reviews. The reports do not establish that the retail-price figure and the proposed cost ceiling refer to the same measure. The announced discount is distinct from the proposed ceiling and from a separate crude-oil plan also described by Oyedele.
