Donald Duke Pledges ₦300 Petrol if Elected
Donald Duke, the Peoples Redemption Party’s presidential candidate, said he would try to bring petrol prices in Nigeria to about ₦300 per litre if elected president in 2027. He outlined the target during a television interview on October 7, describing it as a goal rather than a guaranteed price or a fully detailed implementation plan. Duke proposed pricing petroleum products for domestic use according to production costs instead of international-market rates. He said a portion of Nigeria’s crude oil should be reserved for domestic consumption, with the balance sold internationally. He cited production costs of about $45 per barrel including processing and refining, or about $30 excluding those components. He also said about 600,000 barrels of crude could be allocated daily for local use, depending on requirements. The proposal comes as petrol was reported to cost about ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja and as much as ₦1,500 in some northern markets. Those estimates are geographically specific, not a single national price. Duke argued that more affordable fuel would ease pressure on households and support economic activity, saying fuel should be available and affordable.
