Nigeria Discusses 24-Hour Power Zones in Three Corridors

Nigeria’s federal government has begun discussions with electricity distribution companies on proposed energy zones intended to deliver round-the-clock power in three high-demand corridors, Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said. The plan remains at the discussion stage, with no implementation timetable or specified capacity announced. The proposed zones would cover the Lagos axis, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor and the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor. Tegbe said the initiative is intended to improve how much available electricity distribution companies can take up and deliver to homes, businesses and industries. The government held a closed-door meeting with selected distribution companies to discuss the proposal. Reported attendees included representatives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Eko, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Sahara Energy Group. Tegbe said constraints in the electricity sector extend beyond generation and transmission to the distribution network’s ability to deliver power to consumers.
