Treasury Sets Automatic Creation of Trump Accounts
The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service have issued temporary regulations allowing them to automatically establish Trump Accounts for eligible children who do not already have one, without requiring a parent or guardian to enroll first. Treasury estimates the process could add more than 60 million accounts in 2026, expanding a program available to children under 18. The agencies’ rules describe a system in which Treasury identifies eligible children using authorized government information and creates an account for each. Assets in automatically created accounts will be pooled for investment through a master group trust, while records for individual children are maintained separately. Treasury says the structure permits broad account creation while protecting confidential taxpayer information. The estimate is a projection, not a count of accounts already created through automatic enrollment. Treasury says about 73 million children are eligible; roughly 7 million to 8 million had signed up before the change. The regulations say the process could begin as early as October 1.
