The Shards Finale Leaves Cast Under Suspicion
The first season of The Shards, Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel, has ended without resolving its central mystery, instead deepening it and leaving nearly every main character under suspicion. Episode 9, titled Stairway to Heaven, was released on September 9, 2026, on FX and Hulu, closing out a nine-episode season set in 1981 Los Angeles. The series follows a fictionalized 17-year-old Bret Ellis, played by Igby Rigney, during his final year at the elite Buckley prep school, where the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as the Trawler. The finale ends with police gathering Bret, Susan, Robert and several other characters as suspects in the Trawler murders, a reversal that reframes the season's central question around the protagonists themselves. Susan Reynolds, played by Kaia Gerber, spends much of the season caught between her friendships, her relationship with Thom and her growing connection with Robert. Her situation becomes more dangerous when she is attacked by the Trawler inside her own home, and she later arrives at the Halloween party where the finale's climax unfolds.
