Tennessee pauses 2026 executions after Pike attempt fails

Published 6 October 2026

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a third-party review of the state’s failed attempt to execute Christa Pike and paused the only other execution scheduled in Tennessee for 2026. Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital on September 30 and remains critically ill in a hospital, unconscious and on a ventilator, according to her attorneys. In a Friday, October 2, court filing, Pike’s lawyers said hospital staff were treating injuries to her arms and working to clear the drug from her system. They also asked a court to require the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve evidence from the execution attempt. The extent of Pike’s injuries and her prognosis have not been publicly established. Pike’s attorneys alleged that execution personnel had difficulty placing intravenous lines and that pentobarbital entered her body without properly reaching her bloodstream. They said the team administered a backup set of syringes rather than correcting the IV problem. Those claims describe the lawyers’ account of the procedure; the available information does not establish the cause of the failed execution.
