Washington man charged over alleged Tumbler Ridge shooting aid

Published 6 October 2026

U.S. federal authorities arrested James Cody Bryant in Washington state on October 6, 2026, and charged him with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country over alleged assistance to the February 10 shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Authorities allege Bryant communicated with shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar for about six months before the attack and discussed plans with her. The charge is an accusation, not a finding of guilt. According to allegations described by federal authorities, Bryant offered to help livestream the attack, gave advice about weapons and increasing casualties, and provided money related to the plot. Authorities also allege he advised Van Rootselaar on keeping the plan secret and did not alert law enforcement, despite having opportunities to do so. Reports say Bryant tried at points to dissuade her from carrying out the attack, but ultimately provided assistance. The February 10 shooting killed nine people, including Van Rootselaar, according to the reports. The dead included five students and an education assistant at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, as well as two people at a nearby home.
