Ten killed in clash at Sinaloa prison
A clash at El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, Mexico, killed 10 people, including nine inmates and a visiting family member, Sinaloa authorities said. The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat reported that 16 inmates were injured and transferred for medical care. A separate account from the prison director, relayed in local reporting, put the number injured at 17. The violence occurred on Thursday, October 8, at the prison in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. State Public Security Secretary Sinuhe Tellez said the visitor who died was a minor. Authorities have not released the names of those killed. Security forces entered the facility after the clash, and authorities said the prison was under control, with personnel remaining there. The secretariat said visits had been suspended as a precaution and that the rest of the prison population was safe. Social work staff were contacting the families of the dead, Tellez said. The state attorney general’s office is investigating, according to reports on the authority’s role.
