Talarico Defends Abortion Position at Texas Town Hall

Published 15 October 2026

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico defended his position on abortion and his interpretation of Christian faith during a CNN town hall in Texas, where voter Jody Hunt challenged his assertion that the Bible is silent on the issue. Talarico, a Texas state lawmaker and Presbyterian seminarian, was discussing how his support for abortion rights could align with his faith. Hunt, who described herself as a Catholic and a one-issue voter, responded that the Bible was not silent, citing the Ten Commandments’ prohibition on killing. She also questioned Talarico’s proposals to expand access to contraception and provide age-appropriate sex education, saying parents should be the primary educators of their children. Talarico said he would not support abortion if he believed it was murder or violated the Ten Commandments. He argued that policies other than banning abortion could reduce the number of abortions. He also said Texas’s abortion ban had led to dangerous outcomes for women facing medical emergencies, and called for concern about those consequences. The reports do not provide independent evidence for that claim.
