Synopsys and OpenAI to develop chip design AI model

Published 30 September 2026

Synopsys and OpenAI have announced a multiyear partnership to develop GPTSynopsys, an artificial intelligence model designed to operate electronic design automation tools used in semiconductor engineering. The companies say the project is intended to help engineers carry out chip-design workflows; its performance and commercial impact have not yet been established. The agreement combines OpenAI models with Synopsys software and semiconductor expertise. OpenAI will license Synopsys tools to develop the system, which is intended to run design workflows, interpret results and revise designs in response. Engineers would set objectives and review the model’s work, according to the companies. The planned workflows are intended to address design considerations including power, performance, area, timing and verification. Rather than merely offering general-purpose assistance, GPTSynopsys is being developed to operate the engineering tools directly and iterate on designs based on their outputs. The companies have not provided a launch date or quantified results demonstrating that the system speeds up chip development or improves designs.
