Sui reports 40.6 million TPS in offchain tunnel test
Sui said a live demonstration in Singapore on October 7 reached a peak of 40,614,180 transactions per second, using programmable offchain tunnels to simulate rapid activity between AI agents. The reported rate exceeded the roughly 6.1 million transactions per second recorded in a similar test in July and a 20 million target set for the demonstration, but the activity was not processed as direct onchain transactions. According to Sui, more than 10,000 tunnels were opened on its mainnet during the test. The tunnels are programmable channels in which activity takes place offchain and is settled to the blockchain when a channel closes. Sui said opening and closing a tunnel require onchain transactions, while interactions between those steps occur offchain. The test took place at Sui Basecamp in Singapore. Sui said the activity included payments, games and chat, and was intended to demonstrate the system’s capacity for high-frequency interactions such as those that might occur between AI agents. The 40.6 million figure represents a reported peak inside the tunnels, not a rate of transactions directly executed on Sui’s blockchain.
