Starmer Quits as MP, Triggering Holborn and St Pancras Byelection

Published 1 September 2026

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on September 1, 2026, that he will step down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, triggering a byelection that will serve as an early test for his successor, Andy Burnham. The announcement came on the same day Burnham was set to address the House of Commons for the first time as prime minister, having taken over from Starmer in July. Starmer, who served as prime minister from 2024 until his resignation in June 2026, informed his local Labour constituency party staff of his decision to leave parliament after 11 years representing the north London seat.
