SpaceX Agrees to Acquire 800 MHz Spectrum for Starlink Mobile

Published 9 October 2026

SpaceX has agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band, a step toward its ambition to make Starlink Mobile a major U.S. wireless carrier. Announced October 8, the transaction still requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission, and the proposed service would also need terrestrial infrastructure to operate as a nationwide network. SpaceX says the low-band frequencies would complement its existing global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum and satellite network. Lower-frequency signals can travel farther and pass through obstacles such as walls more effectively, while the 2 GHz spectrum is intended to provide capacity. The company says combining the spectrum with satellite connectivity and ground-based infrastructure could help Starlink Mobile serve devices across a wider range of locations. The agreement does not mean that Starlink Mobile is already an operating nationwide carrier. The spectrum transaction remains subject to FCC review, and SpaceX has not specified in the announcement how much ground infrastructure it would deploy or when.
