Sony disc production halt: Licensing solution proposed
Sony's decision to cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028 has sparked concern among collectors and physical media advocates. However, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden believes the situation, while "depressing," is solvable, suggesting Sony could adopt a model similar to Microsoft's approach with Xbox discs. The core of the issue, according to Layden, lies in Sony's manufacturing process. Unlike Microsoft, which licenses disc production to certified third-party manufacturers, Sony maintains its disc pressing operations in-house through its subsidiary, Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC). Layden argues that Sony could continue to support physical releases, particularly for collector's editions and smaller runs, by licensing its proprietary disc-pressing technology to specialized manufacturers. He stated that without such a licensing agreement, there is no clear path to sustain physical disc production. Sony has clarified that reports suggesting a drastic 90 percent cut in disc production are inaccurate.
