Sibiya resigns as police disciplinary proceedings begin

Published 12 October 2026

Shadrack Sibiya resigned from the South African Police Service on October 12, 2026, as internal disciplinary proceedings against him began, and police said his employment ended immediately. The SAPS classifies his departure as a dishonourable discharge because the case was underway when he resigned, spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said. Sibiya’s legal representative tendered the resignation after the disciplinary proceedings began, according to Mathe. The hearing concerned allegations arising from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Sibiya had been served notice of the hearing on September 29; it was initially set for October 5 and postponed to October 12 after he sought time to consult his lawyers. He had also approached the Labour Court in an effort to stop the process. With his resignation, the disciplinary hearing will not proceed, leaving those allegations without a finding, according to reporting on the case. The SAPS account says the resignation was treated as a dishonourable discharge because proceedings were ongoing; the classification was not a determination of the underlying allegations.
