Poland deploys 20,000 police to schools after attacks
Polish police launched a nationwide security operation at schools on Monday, deploying more than 20,000 officers after three attacks at educational institutions in four days killed a caretaker and injured others. Police said they had inspected 80,000 educational institutions and detained 135 people since Friday. The detentions involved people suspected of carrying dangerous weapons or making threats, according to reports. The figures were reported by police and were not independently audited. The attacks occurred in the Mazovian region and Warsaw. On October 8, a 19-year-old wounded students, staff and passersby at a vocational school in Ostrołęka. The following day, a 15-year-old former pupil killed a caretaker and injured two staff members at a primary school in Leszczydół-Nowiny. On October 10, a 21-year-old woman injured three people at a postsecondary school in Warsaw. The suspects were taken into custody, according to one account. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced the planned deployment on Sunday. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the attacks appeared to be spontaneous and not part of a large organized group.
