Sherri Shepherd to be first woman Genie on Broadway

Sherri Shepherd, the Emmy Award-winning talk show host and comedian, is set to make a historic debut as the Genie in Disney's Broadway production of "Aladdin." This marks the first time a woman will portray the iconic, wish-granting character in any Disney production of the musical. Shepherd is scheduled to begin her limited engagement on October 16, 2026, and will continue in the role through January 3, 2027, at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Disney on Broadway announced the casting on Tuesday, highlighting Shepherd's extensive career in entertainment. The role of the Genie was famously originated on screen by Robin Williams and has been a staple on Broadway, previously played by actors such as James Monroe Iglehart. Shepherd expressed her excitement and honor at taking on the character, stating, "Joining Aladdin on Broadway is an absolute dream come true-and an incredible honor."
