September Crypto Losses Reach Up to $768 Million
Crypto-related hacks and exploits caused an estimated $766.5 million to $768.4 million in losses in September, making it the costliest month for such incidents in 2026 so far, according to estimates from PeckShield and CertiK. The figures differ because the firms counted different numbers of incidents: PeckShield logged 55 major cases, while CertiK recorded 97. Two incidents accounted for most of the reported losses. Bitget revised its estimate for a breach involving its hot wallets to about $388 million, up from an initial $352 million. The Liquid Network exploit was estimated at about $319 million to $320 million. Together, the cases represented more than 90% of the monthly total in the available estimates. The reported amount attributed to the Liquid Network incident was reduced by returned funds. PeckShield said 3,400 bitcoin had been returned, while other accounts put the amount returned at more than $270 million. The reporting does not provide a reconciled final figure for the network’s net loss. The estimates place September well above August, though the size of the increase is uncertain because the firms used different August baselines.
