Reed returns at Spanish Open after Wentworth injury

Published 8 October 2026

Patrick Reed said he was fit to return to competition at the Spanish Open in Madrid on October 8, after withdrawing from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with hand swelling and a shoulder problem. He acknowledged that discomfort remained as he resumed play in the Race to Dubai standings lead. Reed withdrew during the second round at Wentworth on September 18. He said his neck and shoulder were already tight before he struck a tree root on the ninth hole, after which his hand swelled and he could not make a normal golf swing. He feared he might have broken a bone and left the tournament to seek medical attention. After returning to Texas, Reed said tests found no damage to his hand and identified his shoulder as the issue. No more specific diagnosis was disclosed. He said doctors advised him to take additional time away from competition, and that the setback cost him about a week. Reed said he felt healthy enough to compete in Madrid, though the shoulder could remain uncomfortable. The Spanish Open is his first event since Wentworth and provides his first competitive test since the withdrawal.
