Prime Video Releases The Love Hypothesis Adaptation

Prime Video released its film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis for streaming on September 23, centering the romantic comedy on a fake relationship between doctoral student Olive Smith and professor Adam Carlsen. The story follows their arrangement as it develops into a romance, while Olive pursues research on early detection methods for pancreatic cancer and faces obstacles in academia. Olive, played by Lili Reinhart, impulsively kisses Adam, played by Tom Bateman, to persuade her friend Anh that she has moved on from Jeremy, a longtime crush in the film. The book’s plot differs on that point: Jeremy and Olive were former partners. In the movie, Olive and Adam agree to pretend to date, setting up the central relationship. The adaptation also changes how the story handles Dr. Tom Benton, a Harvard professor and colleague of Adam. In the film, Benton offers Olive access to his lab but threatens to take her research unless she sleeps with him, according to a comparison of the book and movie. The film omits the novel’s plot point in which Olive records Benton’s advances. Instead, Anh tells Adam what happened, and he confronts Benton.
