Pittsburgh beats Virginia Tech after final kick ruled no good

Published 3 October 2026

Pittsburgh beat Virginia Tech 35-33 on Friday after officials ruled John Love’s final field-goal attempt no good, ending the Hokies’ unbeaten start under coach James Franklin. The ruling stood, and the available video angles have not conclusively shown whether the kick passed inside or outside the left upright. Love attempted the kick with three seconds remaining, as Virginia Tech trailed by two at Lane Stadium. Some views appeared to show the ball passing inside the upright, while others supported the officials’ wide-left ruling. The stadium crowd initially reacted as though Love had made it, but the officials signaled no good and Pittsburgh secured the win. The play was not reviewable under the NCAA rule described in postgame accounts. That rule permits review of whether a kick passed inside or outside the uprights when the ball is below their tops. Reports said officials judged Love’s kick to have crossed above the uprights, placing it outside the reviewable conditions. The exact path of the ball remains unresolved in the available footage. Franklin said after the game that he could not tell from his position whether the kick was good.
