Petrobras and Cardano Develop Two Fuel-Tracking Applications

Published 30 September 2026

Petrobras and the Cardano Foundation have developed two research-stage applications with the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro to track environmental claims linked to sustainable aviation fuel and lifecycle data for Petrobras’s Diesel R renewable fuel. The applications are intended to make fuel-related records more traceable and reduce the risk that an environmental benefit is claimed more than once, but the partners have not disclosed commercial use or fuel coverage. The Cardano Foundation announced the projects on September 30 as part of an ongoing research and development collaboration involving Petrobras and PUCRio’s Ledger Labs. One application uses a Book-and-Claim model for sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF. That approach separates the environmental benefit attributed to fuel from the physical fuel itself, allowing a benefit to be allocated to an airline, company or passenger even if the SAF is produced or used elsewhere. According to the Foundation, the system represents SAF’s environmental attributes with digital CSSAF tokens on Cardano. The tokens can be transferred and retired when a benefit is claimed.
