OpenAI launches persistent Dots AI agents with restricted access

OpenAI has launched Dots, persistent artificial intelligence agents designed to work across connected applications and continue tasks in the background, as the company expands beyond chat-based tools. Announced at its DevDay event on September 29, the agents are initially available to eligible Pro and Business Premium subscribers, while some workplace plans can access a beta through an administrator. OpenAI says each Dot operates on its own cloud computer and browser and can connect to more than 4,000 apps. Users can interact with the agents through ChatGPT and workplace platforms including Slack and Microsoft Teams. The company says Dots can retain context, learn from feedback and handle ongoing responsibilities rather than waiting for a prompt at each step. Users may also choose to connect a Dot to their own computer. The company describes a background feature called proactive research, in which an agent can look for relevant information through connected apps. OpenAI says those tools are restricted to read-only access during that research, preventing the agent from sending messages or changing app content in that mode.
