OpenAI launches lower-cost GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol at its DevDay conference on September 29, presenting it as a lower-cost model that it says comes close to GPT-6 Astra on selected coding, computer-use and professional-work tasks. The company said Sol’s standard API token prices are about one-fifth of Astra’s, while confirming that the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra had been shelved. OpenAI lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Cached input, which allows developers to reuse context across requests, costs $0.10 per million tokens. OpenAI says those prices make the model useful for agents that need to repeat work or handle longer tasks, though the reports provide no independent evaluation of that claim. The company’s published benchmark results say Sol matched Astra on the DeepSWE v1.1 software-engineering test and came within 2.1 points on OSWorld 2.0, a computer-use benchmark. OpenAI also reported that Sol scored 2.2 points above Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 on AutomationBench, which tests multistep business workflows, at about one-third of the cost.
