OpenAI in Talks for $30 Billion at $1.4 Trillion Valuation
OpenAI is in preliminary talks to raise at least $30 billion in a private funding round at a reported pre-money valuation of about $1.4 trillion, with United Arab Emirates funds and BlackRock among the prospective investors, according to reporting attributed to Bloomberg. The discussions have not produced a confirmed investment, and the amount, valuation and participants could change. Funds from the UAE, including Abu Dhabi-based MGX, are reportedly considering investing as much as $10 billion collectively. BlackRock is also in discussions. The University of California endowment, Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz have reportedly discussed joining, though their participation is not settled. OpenAI is presenting the proposed $1.4 trillion valuation as a fixed price and has not selected a lead investor, according to reports. The figure is pre-money, meaning it refers to the company’s valuation before new funding is added. OpenAI’s March financing valued it at $852 billion post-money after a $122 billion round. Those valuation measures use different bases, so they are not directly equivalent. The talks come as OpenAI has delayed plans for an initial public offering.
