O’Reilly returns to City and misses England fixtures

Published 1 October 2026

Nico O’Reilly has returned to Manchester City and will miss England’s remaining Nations League fixtures this international break, the Football Association said. The FA said no replacement call-up was planned for the matches against Croatia and Czechia. The 21-year-old defender was absent from England’s 2-0 win over Czechia on Tuesday after missing training. Reports link his withdrawal to injury and say he returned to City for further assessment or treatment, but the FA statement did not identify the issue. No recovery timeline has been provided, leaving his availability for City’s next matches unclear. England are scheduled to face Croatia in Rijeka on Saturday before hosting Czechia at Wembley next Tuesday. O’Reilly will play no part in either fixture, according to the FA. The announcement did not say whether City would issue a separate update on his fitness. O’Reilly had featured in England’s opening Nations League match, a 3-2 home defeat to Spain, before missing the Czechia game. England’s win on Tuesday came after Czechia had a player sent off; Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane scored for the visitors.
