Nirvana to Receive MTV Video Vanguard Award

Nirvana is slated to receive the 2026 MTV Video Vanguard Award, MTV announced on September 9. The iconic band will be honored during the Video Music Awards ceremony scheduled for September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The award recognizes artists for their significant contributions and impact on music video innovation. MTV cited the band's historic performance at the 1992 VMAs as a key reason for bestowing the honor. That performance, which featured the band playing "Lithium" and teasing the then-unreleased "Assault Me," is remembered for its raw energy and stage destruction, including Kurt Cobain's comments directed at Axl Rose. Nirvana also performed at the VMAs in 1993, and surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic accepted awards in 1994 following Cobain's death. Nirvana's breakthrough came with the 1991 album "Nevermind," which, along with the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," propelled the Seattle-based trio to global stardom and is credited with shifting the music landscape from glam rock to alternative rock. "Nevermind" has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has garnered nearly 3.1 billion streams on Spotify.
