Nigeria’s Public Debt Reaches N166.79 Trillion
Nigeria’s public debt rose to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, an increase of N7.44 trillion, or 4.67%, from N159.35 trillion at the end of March, according to figures from the Debt Management Office. The increase covers the second quarter of 2026 and brings the reported debt total to its latest stated level. Domestic debt accounted for N91.59 trillion, while external debt stood at N75.20 trillion, reported as $54.52 billion. Domestic obligations made up the larger share of the total. The DMO figures put Nigeria’s overall debt at $120.93 billion, though the naira and dollar totals use different currency measurements. The Federal Government accounted for about N152.77 trillion of the debt, while the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory together accounted for N14.01 trillion. The subnational total comprised N9.42 trillion in external debt and N4.59 trillion in domestic debt, according to the figures. Within the Federal Government’s domestic portfolio, FGN bonds were the largest category, at N64.84 trillion, or 74.53% of its domestic debt. Nigerian Treasury Bills accounted for N19.48 trillion, or 22.39%.
