Soludo’s Office Disputes Obi’s Godparent Claim

Former Anambra governor Peter Obi said he and his wife are godparents to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s children, but the office of Soludo’s wife, Nonye Soludo, disputed his personal role and said the godparent ties are between the two families’ wives. Obi made the remark at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ 22nd Conference in Enugu on Friday, September 25. He described the families as close and said they were not quarrelling. His comments circulated in a video, prompting inquiries to Nonye Soludo’s office, according to a statement issued Saturday by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe. Ezeigwe said Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to one of Obi’s daughters, while Obi’s wife, Margaret, is the baptismal godmother to one of the Soludos’ daughters. The statement said Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the Soludos’ children and that Governor Soludo has not been a godparent to any of Obi’s children. The office said Obi may have misspoken and described the relationship between the families as cordial. It urged the public not to interpret his remarks as meaning that he personally holds a godparent role for any of the governor’s children.
