Anambra, Obi dispute debt and liabilities from his tenure

Anambra’s government and former governor Peter Obi are disputing whether external loans and other liabilities should be attributed to his administration, with the state citing an outstanding balance of about N127.4 billion and Obi arguing that the figure does not establish what his government borrowed or left unpaid. Information Commissioner Law Mefor said in a statement on September 26 that eight World Bank and International Development Association facilities associated with Obi’s tenure had an original value of $123.77 million. Citing Debt Management Office figures, Mefor said $92.35 million, equivalent to about N127.4 billion, remained outstanding as of June 30, 2026. He said successive governments, including the current administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, continue to service the facilities through deductions from federal allocations. Obi, speaking in a September 24 television interview, said the figures should distinguish between approved facilities, amounts actually drawn and balances outstanding at different dates.
