Nexon Nears Deal for StarCraft Sequel Development Rights

Nexon is reportedly on the verge of finalizing a deal with Blizzard Entertainment that would grant the South Korean publisher the rights to develop a new mainline game in the StarCraft franchise. The agreement, which would not involve selling the intellectual property outright, could pave the way for a potential StarCraft 3, ending a more than decade-long hiatus for the iconic real-time strategy series. According to a report from the South Korean newspaper Chosun, a contract between Nexon and Blizzard is nearing completion. A senior gaming industry official told the publication that once finalized, Nexon would hold the development rights for a sequel to the existing StarCraft games. The deal would allow Nexon to create new content under the StarCraft IP, while ownership would remain with Blizzard and its parent company, Microsoft. The potential partnership comes as StarCraft maintains a powerful cultural legacy in South Korea, where the original 1998 game still ranks among the top 10 most-played titles in PC cafés.
