New Order's Gillian Gilbert Reveals She Is Living With Cancer

Published 16 September 2026

Gillian Gilbert, the longtime keyboardist and guitarist of the British band New Order, has publicly disclosed that she is living with cancer. The 65-year-old musician made the announcement in a statement shared on Instagram on September 15, 2026, to clarify a misunderstanding that arose from a recent interview with her husband and bandmate, drummer Stephen Morris. In the interview with Rolling Stone, published earlier in September, Morris had stated, "I've got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time." His comments were widely interpreted as referring to his own serious illness. Gilbert's statement sought to correct that impression. "Thankfully, he is well. It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer," Gilbert wrote. She explained that the health problem Morris referenced was a "shared one," but the nuance was lost, leading to the confusion. Gilbert did not disclose the specific type of cancer, its stage, or her prognosis. Gilbert's disclosure provides context for an announcement made by New Order in June 2026.
