New Madring Circuit Debuts Amid Driver Safety Concerns

Formula 1 drivers are expressing significant concerns about the demanding nature of the Madring, a newly constructed 5.4-kilometer circuit hosting the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend. The 22-corner hybrid track, which combines purpose-built sections with public roads, is set to make its debut with limited historical data for teams and drivers. Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has warned of potential "big shunts" after testing the circuit on a simulator, describing it as "very difficult" and challenging to complete a clean lap. He noted that the track has a tendency to create significant incidents in certain places. Carlos Sainz, a Madrid native and ambassador for the circuit, anticipates an "intense" and "fun" racing weekend, comparing the new layout to newer street circuits like Baku and Jeddah, which are known for promoting close racing. However, other assessments suggest a more cautious outlook. One report indicated that a Formula 3 test session on the track produced 19 red flags over two days, with 11 attributed to contact with barriers, raising questions about the circuit's safety and unforgiving nature.
