Mike Tyson Recounts Overdose in Netflix Documentary

Published 14 October 2026

Mike Tyson says he experienced repeated drug overdoses, including one he recalled as especially severe, while discussing his history of substance use in the Netflix documentary TYSON. He also says he has not used cocaine or alcohol since trying the psychedelic 5-MeO-DMT, an account of his own experience rather than independent evidence of treatment effectiveness. In the documentary, Tyson describes an overdose during which he said his nose was bleeding and he was hysterical and sweating. He said he had overdosed many times, but this episode was more extreme than the others. The series, a four-part account of his life and career, was released October 13. Tyson connects his use of the psychedelic, commonly called toad, with a change in his relationship to drugs and alcohol. He said he has used it more than 100 times and consults it before major decisions. His statements describe his personal perceptions and reported behavior; they do not establish that the substance is a medically proven treatment for addiction. His wife, Lakiha Spicer, recounted how a friend connected them with a shaman who introduced Tyson to 5-MeO-DMT, which she said comes from a toad.
