Microsoft Announces Xbox Labs to Explore Gaming Technology
Microsoft has announced Xbox Labs, a small team of game makers, engineers and scientists tasked with exploring emerging gaming technologies and turning ideas into experiences for players and developers. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the initiative on October 13, saying the group would build in the open and assess its work by whether more people play and create. Sharma’s announcement pointed to recent projects that have decompiled and rebuilt games to run on hardware they were not designed for, translated PC builds to Apple Silicon, and brought games into browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU. She also cited games remixed into other games as examples of experiments challenging established assumptions about how games are made and played. The announcement did not explicitly describe Xbox Labs as an artificial intelligence initiative or specify what its first projects will do. Some reports have connected the team to AI-assisted game development, based on the recent wave of experimental ports and modifications, but Sharma’s stated remit is broader: exploring emerging ideas and making them available for players and developers to experience.
