Mattie Music Group sues over Olivia Dean song
Mattie Music Group has filed a copyright lawsuit against companies associated with Olivia Dean’s song “I’ve Seen It,” alleging that the track copied protected musical elements from Bill Withers’s “Just the Two of Us.” The complaint, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, names record label Capitol Records and music publishers, but not Dean or her co-writers. The lawsuit alleges that “I’ve Seen It,” the closing track on Dean’s 2025 album “The Art of Loving,” reproduces substantial parts of Withers’s song, including its melody. Mattie Music Group, which administers Withers’s catalog, says it hired musicologist Alexander Stewart to compare the compositions. According to the complaint, Stewart found substantial similarities in protectable musical expression. Those conclusions are claims presented by the plaintiff, not a court finding. The complaint argues that the number and arrangement of shared musical features support an inference that the similarities did not arise from coincidence, independent creation or common musical elements. The case has not yet established whether copyright infringement occurred.
